NTT to Challenge Yahoo! Japan in Broadband New Subs (NTT)

Japanese telecom giant NTT (NTT) has signaled a shift in its operating strategy for 2006 placing more emphasis on increasing the number of subscribers to its fiber optic Internet services over ADSL. Yahoo! Japan is the current market leader in ADSL subscribers even though both firms suffered decreases in their number of ADSL subscribers in 2005. According to the Nikkei Shimbun, NTT aims to overtake Yahoo! Japan in terms of number of subscribers to high-speed Internet and at the same time both firms expect their number of fiber optic subscribers to surpass ADSL subs by the end of the new upcoming fiscal year ending in March 2007. NTT plans to add 2.7 million new fiber optic subscribers with 1.5m coming from eastern Japan and 1.2m from western Japan.
