  • Nomura's Individual Investor Survey for August: Caution Prevails [View article]
Asif -- Thanks for leaving a comment. I don't blame you for watching from the sidelines. Ultimately, it depends on one's specific situation and if one is trading or investing. The volatility makes for good trading circumstances. At the same time it is a possibility to accumulate via buying on dips if one is bullish longer-term and has patience. I strongly doubt the "gloom" case for Japan but certainly respect Enzio's position and valued arguments.

  • UPDATE [1] Nomura Enters Hot Japanese Online Brokerage Arena (NMR) [View article]
Simon, thanks for pointing that out. Home Trade did hit 1m accts in '02 and currently is approaching 2m. I misunderstood it for the forthcoming "Joinvest" (spelled differently than above "Joy Invest") project. The most recent news concerning Home Trade would be it launching margin accounts and trading. Last I heard Joinvest is expected to begin operations this April and will serve as a more flexible and powerful on-line brokerage option targeted at all types of investors. I will update this post to correct the erroneous information.

  • Brokerage Nomura's Low Trading Volume Should Ramp Up Soon (NMR) [View article]
So far Japanese brokerages are reporting huge Q3 profits with Daiwa's quadrupling and Matsui's more than doubling. A Reuters article noted that "retail trades now account for 40 percent of transactions at Japan's major stock exchanges, up from 30 percent a year ago, and eight in 10 of those trades are made online." I hope Nomura is ready for the launch of its on-line brokerage this April. It seems to be doing quite well in IPO underwriting. Nomura will report earnings Jan. 30th.

  • Barron's Online on Nomura Holdings' Comeback (NMR, MTU, GS, MER, MWD) [View article]
Any Mad Money followers out there? James J. Cramer says his favorite play is Mitsubishi UFJ (ticker: MTU) because, "The situation in Japan is kind of like the U.S. in 1990. Real estate has bottomed out in Japan, which is a bullish sign for the banks, because the economy is getting moving again." He also says another way to play Japan is the iShares MSCI Japan Index (ticker: EWJ). See last Friday's Mad Money Mail Bag.
